In 2023, Ramadan Lights was a historic moment that captured global attention. It was a project done in collaboration with Heart of London Business Alliance, the Aziz Foundation, the founder of Ramadan Lights, Aisha Desai and Algbra. This was truly a labour of love, with support from the community flooding in, in a way we could never have predicted. This year 2024, we are back with newly designed lights that will illuminate Piccadilly Circus once again!
The Aziz Foundation was established in 2015 by the Aziz family, and is inspired by the values and teachings of Islam to support communities in Britain. The Foundation does this through its scholarships and internship programmes, which support individuals and communities to advance social justice for all and promote the common good. The vision is to see a society that is inclusive and fair, where individuals and communities feel a sense of belonging and thrive.
This year’s lights designed by Lantern use rays of light at sunrise and the light of the moon after dark. The sun is significant during Ramadan as the fast begins at dawn and ends as the sun sets. Meanwhile it’s the sighting of the new moon that signifies the start and end of the month of Ramadan.
